The Japanese government has decided that all Olympic events will be held behind closed doors.
There will be “no spectators” at the Olympic venues in Tokyo, which will open on July 23, due to the resurgence of the coronavirus in the Japanese capital, announced the Olympic Minister Tamayo Marukawa on Thursday.
This announcement comes just hours after the Japanese government decided to reinstate a state of health emergency in Tokyo from Monday until August 22, a measure that will cover the entire Olympics period, lasting until August 8.
The question of whether spectators would be present at the Tokyo Games dragged on for many months, with the various authorities initially announcing a ban on foreign spectators before setting an initial limit on the number of local spectators, and finally deciding to hold the events behind closed doors given the health situation in the country.
