Just out of prison, Ulrick tries to reintegrate into society. He has no particular ambitions, he just wants a fresh start. But between his ex-mafia boss, his landlady who sexually harasses him, his son who doesn’t want to see him…, Ulrick struggles to find his place.
He’s a nice guy always ready to lend a hand… But up to what point?
A film about our weaknesses and flaws, a tribute to imperfect sex, and above all, a global offensive against the petty and pathetic precision that governs the world.
But also an exemplary Scandinavian film!! With a script by Kim Fupz Aakeson, Danish; Stellan Skarsgård, Swedish, in the lead role, and Hans Petter Moland directing, Norwegian, marking his first comedy.
Today one of the most renowned Norwegian filmmakers, particularly noted for the strength of his portrayals of humans placed in hostile environments.
IN PHOTOGRAPHY
Is it due to his remarkable first career in advertising that Hans surrounds himself with one of the most experienced directors of photography in Norway and more broadly, in Scandinavia? PHILLIP OGAARD has worked on around fifty feature films and over a hundred commercials and TV series.
In 2009, he did the cinematography for the film NORD (also selected in this Northern Cinema(s)), which opened the “Panorama” section of the Berlin festival. Among other accolades, he won the Kodak Award in Norway, Sweden, and Germany, the Amanda (Norwegian Film Award), the Golden Beetle, the Swedish National Film Award, the Silver Frog, Camera Image, and Poland.
IN THE SCRIPT, KIM FUPZ AAKESON operates, and in 2003, he received no less than an honorary award, recognizing his career as a screenwriter and his contribution to Scandinavian cinema!
STELLAN SKARSGÅRD plays Ulrik, the main character.
THEATRE
Originally Swedish, he was revealed at 16 on television and from 1972, for 15 years, became one of the pillars of the Royal Dramatic Theatre of Stockholm, working under the direction of great Scandinavian directors, including Ingmar Bergman.
CINEMA
His first appearance in cinema was also in 1972, in Jan Halldoff’s Firmafesten, and he became one of the most popular actors in his country, winning, in 1982, for his role in The Simple-Minded Murderer, the Guldbagge – the Swedish equivalent of the César -, and the Best Actor Award at the Berlin Film Festival.
He has appeared in more than 80 feature films, from the most intimate to the most spectacular (The Unbearable Lightness of Being by Philip Kaufman, The Hunt for Red October by John McTiernan, Amistad by Steven Spielberg, Breaking the Waves by Lars von Trier). A Somewhat Gentleman is his third collaboration with Hans Petter Moland.
In short, a tender, sarcastic, and funny film not to be missed!
