The FIPE (Independent Federation of Students’ Parents) and the PEEP (Federation of Public Education Students’ Parents) of the Impérial Park sent a letter on August 24 to the president and vice-presidents of the region and department. They are requesting that at least two masks per day be distributed to students.
“FIPE and PEEP, of which I am the representative, have decided to join this initiative because we believe that some families would be in difficulty, particularly those with multiple children,” says Eric Fouzari.
A significant cost for families
They emphasize that buying masks represents a substantial expense. “The difficulty with this increased back-to-school allowance is that it does not cover the necessary mask needs as if it were part of school supplies. I think this allowance should be given with vouchers to use for purchasing school supplies.”
It should also be noted that not everyone is eligible for this allowance. This difference may be poorly perceived by some citizens. “The problem is that some people do not receive this aid, and I don’t see why these people should be penalized. It’s always the middle class that is affected.”
Concern about the school return
Beyond the issue of masks, there is also the respect for health rules and the lack of preparation from the government. “These measures are not real decisions. We will soon be in a situation of epidemic peak to such an extent that the government will be forced to change the health measures.”
Another problem arises: the implementation of these protocols, which can change very quickly. “Schools are starting with only one piece of information. But it is well-known in advance that there will be a plan B and C. They should have been prepared so that schools can adapt to this system. Small establishments can adapt, but I wouldn’t say the same for big ones and those in urban areas. How do you expect to welcome students peacefully in boarding and day schools? For example, at Lycée du Parc Impérial where my children attend, there are 1,000 students who will eat in the cafeteria. Even though distancing is mandatory, there are 1,000 students eating without masks.”
