Political parties react to Christian Estrosi’s resignation.

Christian Estrosi announced his resignation from the Presidency of the Nice Cรดte d’Azur Metropolis. Since then, many political opponents have reacted.

During the Metropolitan Council on July 10, Christian Estrosi announced his resignation from the presidency of the Nice Cรดte dโ€™Azur Metropolis. However, he immediately submitted his candidacy to reclaim the position of president of the Metropolis.

A Real-Fake Resignation?

This is at least what Philippe Vardon, president of the group Another Path for the Metropolis, suggests in his statement: โ€œReal-fake resignation because, obviously, as mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi is at no risk regarding his reappointment to the presidency of the Metropolis. Behind the polite term ‘clarification’, the goal is clear: to uncover the mayors who are Estrosi-skeptics, and to sanction โ€” by depriving them of their vice-presidencies โ€” the already identified mayors. Gone are the good old days of a united metropolis, grand declarations, and ‘one mayor-one vote.’

Eric Ciotti, for his part, is calling on the mayor of Nice to resign from his mayoral office on social media.

Toward the Municipal Elections

The French Communist Party of the Alpes-Maritimes points to the disconnect between the mayor of Nice and his constituents: โ€œBut this personal battle is so far removed from the daily concerns of the people of Nice! Are the major maneuvers of the 50 shades of the right for the municipal elections in Nice accelerating?โ€

For the left-wing coalition ViVA!, this resignation demonstrates the contradiction in Christian Estrosi’s political commitments: โ€œHe thus confirms that he no longer acts in the interests of the inhabitants of the Metropolis but is now focused on one thing: defeating his frenemy. This resignation for ‘personal convenience’ mainly highlights the particularly undemocratic nature of this body’s compositionโ€. With only three EELV deputies out of one hundred thirty-three in the Metropolis, only the municipal elections can change things. This internal conflict within the right is therefore likely to last at least until 2026.
