Privatization of Nice Airport: Much Ado About Nothing

Latest News

A lot of fuss about nothing (original title: Much Ado About Nothing, published in 1600) is a popular comedy by Shakespeare. After so much turmoil, declarations of war, taking of positions including a public consultation, false truths, ego battles… we’re back to square one. Playtime is over; we are finally moving on to serious matters.

The privatization (essentially the sale of the shares held by the State in the service concession company) will be carried out taking into account the interests of the territory in terms of strategy and governance.

To this end, a revision of Article 49 of the bill should occur during the parliamentary debate in the Senate. This revision will ensure that local authorities retain control over the airport’s development strategy, economic development of the airport territory, and its management as a tool for territorial development.

A joint working group will develop the specifications that must reflect these principles in the call for tenders. This is the essence of the agreement between Minister Macron and the leading opponent of the project, Christian Estrosi.

This seems entirely logical and should have been the objective from the beginning of the affair if the mayor of Nice had not opted for outright opposition before claiming credit after being received yesterday morning by Minister Macron.

This morning, I obtained progress regarding the privatization of @AeroportNice against @EmmanuelMacron.

However, it turns out that the day before this meeting, it was the senator-mayor of Valbonne, Marc Daunis, who had been received by the same minister to play the role of Mr. “good offices.”

Senator Marc DAUNIS was received Tuesday afternoon by Minister Emmanuel MACRON to discuss the privatization of Nice airport, which is to be debated in the Senate. He will propose amendments to better ensure that the privatization specifications respond both to national and regional interests. The specifications will also need to be submitted for prior approval by the current shareholders.

Ultimately, putting aside the controversies and considering the real issues, we are moving towards a solution that allows the State to implement its decision, the region to retain an airport that fulfills its role regardless of who the main shareholder(s) may be, those at the heart of governance to keep their place, and Christian Estrosi… to move on to something else.

To the more than 30,000 who went to vote during the consultation (?) in the name of Nice patriotism (remember the slogan: vote no against spoliation), it will be said that it was thanks to them that Macron, who wasn’t that bad after all, gave in!

“To return to Much Ado About Nothing”… in this story (comedy?), we find the friendly jibes that inspire Shakespeare, of which the bard is an unmatched master.

It remains to determine who are the romantic characters and their comedic counterparts.
