One of the most important sites from a historical perspective, the Lazaret Cave will be opened to the public beginning with Heritage Days, next September.

The Lazaret Cave belongs to the Lower Paleolithic and was a hunting stop for the pre-Neanderthals. Thanks to the bones and the lithic industry left by humans, discoveries have allowed us to date the siteโ€™s occupations between 200,000 and 130,000 years ago.

At the foot of Mont-Boron, the cave is 35 meters long and between 4 to 14 meters wide. It was classified as a Historic Monument in 1963.

The Lazaret Cave is one of the most fabulous archaeological sites in the department.

The Department, owner of the site, has undertaken its rehabilitation with the installation of a secure walkway and will organize visits for schoolchildren, expected by the thousands.

An educational path and activities will allow for understanding and comprehending the emergence of Homo erectus, one of the most fascinating processes of human evolution.

Illustrated by Eric Ciotti, this new chapter in the life of the Lazaret Cave will not abandon its scientific aspect, in coordination with the DRAC (Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs), with an international call for projects to select a team to continue the excavations.
