This Sunday morning, the street Jacques Médecin will be inaugurated, thus renaming the current rue de l’Opéra by a unanimous vote of the municipal council on November 23, 2018.
This street, where he was born in 1928, also marks the continuation of avenue Jean Médecin, Mayor of Nice from 1947 to 1965, and father of Jacques Médecin.
Jacques Médecin, a controversial figure whose name is inseparable from the political history of Nice, died in Uruguay after spending nearly two years in prison in France for embezzlement and was stripped of his civic rights. He will therefore have a street named after him, coincidentally on the eve of municipal elections, already dubbed the “street of shame” by communists and other left-wing groups who are calling for a gathering for a “counter-inauguration.”
On his part, Christian Estrosi, who himself began his political career under Jacques Médecin by being elected a municipal councilor on his list in 1983, affirmed: “Yes, I am proud to finally give Jacques Médecin the place he deserves. The people of Nice recognize him as a Mayor who did much for his city.”
