Repatriation of the French from Algeria: Fifty Years Later

The fiftieth anniversary of the repatriation of French people from Algeria is an important event for the repatriated and Harki communities. The municipality has therefore decided to celebrate this anniversary, making it a moment of remembrance and reflection.


Throughout 2012, cultural events will be organized in Nice surrounding the fiftieth anniversary of the repatriation of French people from Algeria. A commemorative sculpture will also be installed on the Promenade des Anglais.

Conferences

Six major conferences will be held at the Théâtre National de Nice:
January 26: The settlement of Algeria, starting from 1830
February 23: The Evian Accords
March 29: A hidden tragedy: July 5, 1962, in Oran
September 25: The Harkis, the forgotten ones
October 15: The Exodus and the conditions of the Repatriation
November 15: The contingent and a war that went unnamed.

Cinema

A film festival will take place at the Cinémathèque of the city of Nice from April 1 to the end of June:

This film festival will feature French films made before 1962, such as “Le Bled” by Jean Renoir, “Le Grand jeu” by Jacques Feyder, “Le Grand Rendez-vous” by Jean Dréville, “Les Quatre de Saint Cyr” by Jean Cheirier, “La Piste du Sud” by Pierre Billon, “La Soif des Hommes” by Serge de Polligny.

Commemorative Weekend

A commemorative weekend will be organized on June 30 and July 1, including the unveiling of the commemorative artwork on the Promenade des Anglais, a concert by the Choir of the French Army, and a mass.

Theater

A play by Jacques Bellay, “Enfances Algériennes,” will be performed at the Théâtre National de Nice in December 2012.
