Latest News

The provisional report on road accidents in the Alpes-Maritimes for the month of September 2025 has been released. It reports 73 bodily accidents and four deaths. In Nice, several awareness actions have been carried out. The prefect has also reinforced the measures for the suspension of driving licenses.

The month of September 2025 ended with a stable road safety record in terms of fatalities in the Alpes-Maritimes. Four people lost their lives on the roads of the department, as in September 2024. However, bodily accidents saw a slight increase, with 73 recorded cases compared to 69 the previous year and 62 in August 2025. The number of seriously injured decreased, dropping from 42 to 35.

In Nice, the prefecture continued its prevention campaigns. On October 23, a road safety escape game was organized at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The event was held in partnership with G-Addiction. It was followed by the signing of the charter of the seven commitments for road safety, as part of the “committed employer” program.

The prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes also tightened the scale for driving license suspensions since February 1, 2025. No tolerance is granted to probationary license holders. In the month of September alone, 278 suspension orders were issued, compared to 273 during the same period in 2024.

“The prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes has decided to revise the scale for driving license suspensions since February 1, 2025. It aims to be stricter and grants no tolerance to probationary licenses,” recalls the prefecture of the Alpes-Maritimes.

Since the beginning of the year, 37 people have lost their lives on the department’s roads, eight fewer than in 2024 over the same period. Users of motorized two-wheelers (12 deaths) and pedestrians (9 deaths) remain the most affected, followed by motorists (8 deaths).

Multiple Circumstances

Among the four deaths recorded in September, three occurred in urban areas and one on the highway. No fatal accidents were recorded outside urban areas. Two victims lost their lives between 12 PM and 8 PM, two others between 8 PM and 6 AM.

The breakdown by day shows a concentration of fatal accidents towards the end of the week. Two deaths occurred on a Friday, one on Saturday, and one on Sunday. No fatal accidents were recorded from Monday to Thursday, which proves that driver fatigue remains the main factor in accidents.

The victims belong to different age groups. One person was under 18, another between 18 and 24 years old. Two victims were aged 25 to 64. No deaths were recorded among seniors over 65, compared to two in September 2024.

Regarding the modes of transportation, three victims were riding motorized two-wheelers. A female passenger in a car also lost her life. No deaths were recorded among cyclists or pedestrians. In September 2024, a user of a personal motorized mobility device (PMD) and a buggy driver were among the victims.

The provisional annual report for 2024 recorded 55 deaths in the Alpes-Maritimes, compared to 54 in 2023. The number of seriously injured was 334 in 2024, compared to 354 the previous year.

The data for the month of September 2025 remains provisional. It has been provided by the internal security forces and published by the departmental road safety observatory.
