In response to the heatwave affecting the south of France, the City of Nice, in agreement with the Ministry of Education, is offering a temporary arrangement in schools. Parents can pick up their children earlier than usual.
The orange heatwave warning has been extended in the Alpes-Maritimes. Since Saturday, June 28 at noon, the department has been experiencing high temperatures, with spikes expected to reach up to 40ยฐC. In response, the city of Nice has decided to address the heat risks in educational institutions.
No closures are planned at this stage. Unlike other French cities such as Cavaillon or Montauban, schools in Nice will remain open on Monday, June 30, and Tuesday, July 1. However, parents who wish can pick up their children from 11:30 AM or 1:30 PM. This measure remains optional.
Teachers will conduct classes as usual for the students present. The schedule remains unchanged for those staying within the school premises.
A case-by-case management in schools
The Ministry of Education has reminded regional education authorities of the guidelines in case of high temperatures. Each region must adapt its response. โWe must be pragmatic and make decisions on a case-by-case basis,โ declared the minister Elisabeth Borne. โWhen schools are naturally well-insulated, they can accommodate students.โ
The institutions must organize the reception of children in areas least exposed to the sun. The use of shaded rooms is also recommended for high school exams. Candidates must be able to hydrate regularly.
The parent-teacher association FCPE has called for clearer guidelines from the minister. According to them, many school buildings are not adapted to this type of weather event.
Temperatures are not expected to drop before Thursday. The peak is anticipated on Tuesday and Wednesday, with highs between 36 and 41ยฐC. Nights will remain difficult, with lows not dropping below 27ยฐC on the coast.
The city of Nice is urging caution and encourages families to adapt their schedules if possible.
