Christian Estrosi, Deputy Mayor of Nice, presented the results of the public consultation on school rhythms organized in Nice alongside Lauriano Alzerheina. The outcome is overwhelmingly against the government’s proposal, which can only please the Mayor of Nice who is a staunch opponent of it.

Christian Estrosi did not delay in using this as immediate criticism and a basis for future action:

“I will write to the Prime Minister and the Minister of National Education to convey the results of the consultation. I will wholeheartedly defend the position of the people of Nice to the national authorities and serve as their spokesperson during parliamentary discussions on this bill. Furthermore, I will inform them of my decision to implement this reform, if applied, only at the 2014-2015 academic year start.”

Here are the detailed results analyzed by the monitoring committee, composed of 43 personalities from the teaching world, parents’ associations, school staff, and leisure associations…

32,000 questionnaires distributed

16,495 responses (14,322 respondents are parents, 1,203 are staff or school contributors, 805 are primary school teachers (out of 1,200 primary school teachers in Nice), 31 are members of a youth association, and 134 are other interested parties in this issue).

80.66% of respondents do not want changes to the school day.

74.76% do not want a change to the school holiday calendar and 70.83% would not accept a reduction in summer holidays.

71.58% do not want changes to the school week.
