The prefecture of Alpes-Maritimes and the City of Nice released the city’s security figures for 2021 this week. While overall crime is down, other indicators provide a contrasting view of these numbers.
Between 2017 and 2021, offenses in Nice decreased by 7.32% and according to the prefecture of Alpes-Maritimes, the level of overall crime in 2021 is the lowest recorded. The rate of solved cases increased from 28.53% in 2017 to 35.63% in 2021, and arrests also rose by 15% over the same period.
Increase in domestic violence
However, while overall crime has indeed decreased in Nice, it is necessary to examine the different indicators to observe contrasts.
In 2021, the number of offenses against individuals increased, with the rate of intentional assaults being one of the highest among major cities in France, in Nice, with 7.8 cases per 1000 inhabitants.
Conversely, cases of domestic violence also increased and the voices of victims have been more vocal, which may also explain this rise. The number of solved cases in terms of domestic violence also increased by 26.61% between 2017 and 2021.
Significant drop in offenses against property
The number of offenses against property, which includes thefts or burglaries, has significantly decreased, reaching a “record low” of 35.86 cases per 1000 inhabitants.
The rate of offenses against property had sharply increased in 2018, before decreasing in 2020, a year marked by Covid. This decline continued into the following year.
Significant decrease in road traffic accidents
Between 2017 and 2021, the number of bodily injuries from traffic accidents dropped by 60%, with 14 people killed on the road in 2021 in Nice. 90% of recorded fatal accidents involve pedestrians as well as motorized two-wheelers.
