The suspense was short-lived, and as soon as the polling stations closed, the initial results, although partial, favored the President of the Poitou-Charentes region. Shortly after midnight, news from the PS headquarters on Solférino Street announced Ségolène Royal leading the vote with a score between 55 and 60%.
“This is very good news, and we are very pleased with the result in Nice and the region. Now, we must calmly prepare for the presidential elections behind the candidate unanimously chosen.” Frédérique Grégoire, a city councilor from Nice and supporter of Ségolène Royal, displays a clear joy mixed with a certain relief.
“I am experiencing this moment of happiness intensely and the honor given to me by all the party members. I am facing a mountain to climb until May 2007,” were the first words of the socialist candidate. She expressed thanks to the party members who turned out in large numbers for a vote that saw only 26% abstention in the Alpes-Maritimes department.
Dominique Strauss-Kahn is closely trailing Ségolène Royal with a score of 20/25%, while Laurent Fabius falls below the 10% mark. This ranking, as predicted by polling institutes, opens the Socialist Party’s presidential campaign.
