This week Valentin Vacherot was indeed present at the Shanghai Masters 1000 to try to defend his title. A mission that was shaping up to be complicated, given the magnitude of the feat achieved last season. After a reassuring week in Tokyo, the Monegasque had a mixed run, stopped short after just one small victory.

Spared from the first round thanks to his ranking, Valentin Vacherot made his debut last Saturday against Sebastian Baez. The Monegasque won in two sets 6/4-7/6, confirming the confidence accumulated in recent days, particularly at the Tokyo tournament. Facing an opponent within his reach, he was able to rely on a particularly effective serve, with 15 aces and 83% of points won behind his first serve.

Facing Tommy Paul in the Round of 16, Valentin Vacherot quickly showed signs of nervousness. After a break on each side in the first set, the Monegasque lost his serve again midway through the set. More consistent, the American then closed out his serve to win the first set 6 games to 4. In the second set, Vacherot failed to turn things around. Lacking precision, he multiplied errors and lost 6-2. The Monegasque notably committed 27 unforced errors during the match. Tommy Paul will face Zizou Bergs in the next round, the Belgian who defeated Carlos Alcaraz.

After his exceptional run last year, Valentin Vacherot failed to repeat his feat this year. The Monegasque leaves the tournament after one victory and one defeat. He should thus finish the competition around the 35th place in the world.

Wuhan WTA 1000: Diane Parry continues losing streak since her title in Monterrey

Since winning her first title on the WTA circuit in August, in Monterrey, Diane Parry, still France’s number 1, has failed to build on this positive momentum. After winning her first round at the US Open, she is now on a fourth consecutive loss.

Ghostly throughout the match, and particularly in the second set, Diane Parry lost in 2 sets against Lanlana Tararudee, given a second chance following Linda Noskova’s withdrawal. Ineffective on serve, with only four games won out of eight service games, Diane Parry failed to capitalize on the opportunities provided by her opponent. The French player converted only one of her eight break points, a lack of efficiency that proved costly. For her part, the Thai player then held her serves solidly and dominated against a helpless Nice player.
