Nice Côte d’Azur is committed to the protection of marine mammals!
Nice Côte d’Azur will be the first public intercommunal cooperation establishment to sign the partnership charter of the Pelagos Sanctuary. This agreement, concluded between France, Italy, and Monaco on November 25, 1999, aims to protect marine mammals within the Pelagos Sanctuary, which covers an area of 87,500 km2 with a coastline of 1,256.41 meters.
By signing this charter, Nice Côte d’Azur commits to a voluntary approach towards the protection of cetaceans present in the sanctuary.
The Pelagos charter is part of the general coastal protection policy implemented in the Baie d’Azur contract.
Pelagos, Mediterranean Sanctuary
Created to protect marine mammals from all sources of disturbance arising from human activities, the Sanctuary must reconcile the harmonious development of socio-economic activities with the necessary protection of habitats and species.
Each member country operates according to its own means, and a Permanent Secretariat based in Genoa has been coordinating all actions since 2006.
For the French side, the Port-Cros National Park, headquartered in Hyères, has been mandated by the Ministry in charge of ecology to coordinate national actions.
The Baie d’Azur contract
The Baie d’Azur Contract is a local and contractual program that includes an action plan for environmental development and the protection of the coast and marine environment, covering 75 km of coastline that corresponds to 10 coastal municipalities (the 8 coastal municipalities of Nice Côte d’Azur plus Antibes and Villeneuve-Loubet) and the 5 watersheds associated with the rivers of the area (Brague, Loup, Cagne, Var, Paillons).
The Baie contract will equip the coastline with a tool that will contribute to the preservation of its environmental quality.
