The Heritage Days are celebrating this year the centennial of the foundational law for the protection of historical monuments in France. Through this, the enhancement, promotion, and animation of heritage are celebrated.
Saint-Paul de Vence is fortunate to possess a richly diverse heritage, whose protection has been a significant concern for the mayors of the commune from an early stage. Didnโt Henri Layet save the ramparts of Franรงois 1er from demolition as early as 1872?
This visit is, first and foremost, an invitation to (re)discover the masterpieces of the heritage of Saint-Paul, objects, and monuments that are classified or listed in the inventory of Historical Monuments: from the treasure of the collegiate church to the great fountain.
It will also be an opportunity to enlighten visitors on-site about the actions taken by the commune to protect and enhance the heritage of Saint-Paul: the restoration of the collegiate church and the ramparts, the enhancement of heritage through the work of artists like Folon and Paul Conte, whose Saint-Paulian works we will be delighted to discover.
4 PM: Marc Chagall: a journey through the 20th century from Vitebsk to Saint-Paul de Vence.
Marc Chagall was born in Russia, exiled to America, and spent a large part of his life in Europe. A lover of the Mediterranean light, he settled on the Cรดte dโAzur after the war, first in Vence and then in Saint-Paul de Vence in 1966. In his Saint-Paulian studio, he painted countless landscapes of the village centered around the theme of love, three of which have been reproduced on lecterns.
This visit will take you from lectern to lectern to the school mosaic and the Museum of Saint-Paul, where photographic portraits of Marc Chagall are displayed as part of the exhibition “Marc Chagall, portrait of a traveler.”
