The last obstacle standing in the way of a French bid for the 2024 Summer Games has fallen: the Paris Council has voted in support of the Olympic project.
A vote that did not achieve unanimity, as members of the Green Party and the Left Party voted against… Who knows why! However, all other political forces demonstrated broad consensus around the Parisian bid.
Representatives from the PS, PCF, PRG, UMP, and UDI-MoDem groups all approved the Mayor of Paris’s proposal by a show of hands.
The obstacle is therefore removed. It had not been much of an obstacle since the massive vote in favor of the Olympic project by the district councils. But this time, the decision is official: the Paris City Hall is giving the green light to a bidding process for the capital for the 2024 Summer Games.
A strong act that the Mayor of Paris acknowledged with the phrase: “We are now embarking on the Olympic adventure!” which is not only a sports project but also involves a very significant economic component in terms of infrastructure investments and a return of visibility on a global level.
This highly anticipated deliberation is not yet the final act of the process, but the path is now clear. The official letter is expected to be signed by Anne Hidalgo and CNOSF President Michel Masseglia in June, well ahead of the September deadline.
The Olympic and Paralympic Ambition Study Association, a sort of pre-candidacy committee for Paris for the 2024 Games, will hold its first meeting this Wednesday at the CNOSF headquarters.
Bernard Lapasset, its president, will host representatives of the sports movement, the State, the Region, and the City of Paris at the CNOSF. Anne Hidalgo, the mayor of the capital, and Thierry Braillard, the Secretary of State for Sports, are expected to attend.
This association replaced the former French Committee for International Sports (CFSI).
