This award also reflects the boundless admiration and recognition for Mr. Gottlieb, who passed away while the 70th anniversary of the 1945 victory was being celebrated. He became a resistor at the age of 17, was arrested in 1944, handed over to the Gestapo and deported to Auschwitz, and liberated in May 1945 by American troops. Charles GOTTLIEB later became a true keeper of memory.

The students of Notre-Dame de la Tramontane College in Antibes received the first prize for their work in transmitting the memory of the Holocaust.

Other awards were given to the Pierre Bonnard College in Le Cannet, and the Roland Garros, Or Torah, and Nazareth colleges in Nice.

The Journeys of Memory, organized by the Department, have allowed 17,000 middle school students to visit Auschwitz-Birkenau since 2003.

As part of the departmental action plan for respecting republican and civic values, the “duty of memory” component includes accompanying the memory journeys to Auschwitz-Birkenau with various actions. It was decided to create an award to recognize the best presentations developed after the trips by teachers and students for the benefit of those who did not participate.
