The aim of the game is to throw the Paillassou, a straw man from Nice, as far as possible using a sheet. The championship will conclude with a ranking determined by referees and will be followed by a “merenda,” a traditional Nice snack.

This sporting event is free of charge. Teams are made up of two people and each represents an existing or imaginary country. There are 4 age categories:

Category 1 (0 to 5 years),
Category 2 (6 to 11 years),
Category 3 (12 to 17 years),
Category 4 (18 years and over).

The World Championship of Paillassou Throwing is an old New Year’s tradition. The Paillassou is a puppet that embodies all the worries accumulated over the past year. Throwing it as far as possible is a symbolic way to rid oneself of these past difficult times and start the new year with a light heart.
