The Alpes-Maritimes Nice-Cannes Marathon will take place this Sunday, November 4th at 8:00 AM on the Promenade des Anglais in Nice, concluding in Cannes on the Boulevard de la Croisette near the Martinez Hotel.
This 5th edition has registered a total of 10,659 participants this year, including 386 teams competing in the Alpes-Maritimes Nice-Cannes Relay Marathon sponsored by Caisse d’Epargne.
On an international level, the event is gaining increasing recognition with 58 nations represented this year at the starting line, accounting for 28% of international competitors. (Editor’s note: last year, 26% of the participants were international)
Regarding the timing, the podium seems likely to be contested between Kenyan David MANDAGO, who has a personal record of 2h09’53” at the Kosice Marathon in 2007, and Ethiopian Admasu MESFIN, 3rd at the Vienna Marathon in 2010 with a time of 2h09’41”. (Editor’s note: the event record set last year by Kenyan Lukas KANDA is currently 2h08’40”) The women’s race is also expected to be very competitive. Eritrean Nébiat HABTEMARIAM, holder of the best reference time (2h32’04” at the Hamburg Marathon in 2008) and Kenyan Emily ROTICH (second at the Dublin Marathon in 2011 with 2h32’10”) are expected to lead the women’s race. This year, to meet IAAF requirements, gender equality will be maintained in terms of prize amounts as well as the number of invited athletes.
Champions Alain Bernard and Christine Schoenn are among the many personalities supporting the runners. Both are ambassadors for Team Conseil Général 06, created to support athletes from the Alpes-Maritimes region who could be selected for the 2012 London Olympic or Paralympic Games. Alain Bernard, Olympic and World Champion swimmer, is the sponsor of this 5th edition of the Alpes-Maritimes Nice-Cannes Marathon. Christine Schoenn participated in the Wheelchair Tennis events at the 2012 London Paralympic Games, proudly representing the athletes of Team Conseil Général 06.
For the third consecutive year, the event will serve as a platform for the French Marathon Championships, allowing the race to feature more than 300 runners from the French elite on Sunday. Promises of remarkable performances!
