The Nice Archaeological Crypt is a vast underground room covering 2,000 square meters located beneath Garibaldi Square. It is comparable to the Louvre crypt, particularly for its historical and cultural significance and its facilities designed for the general public. The inauguration will take place this Friday, October 5, at 5 PM at Toja Square and live on Nice.fr TV.

crypte.jpg It was the archaeological excavations for the first tram line that uncovered the very well-preserved remains of a fortified complex around the Pairolière gate dating from the 14th century, the era of the Counts of Provence.

These fortifications later underwent transformations under the influence of the Dukes of Savoy. A central element in the defense of the County of Nice, they disappeared on the order of Louis XIV in 1706, leading to three centuries of oblivion. The Nice Archaeological Crypt was classified as a Historical Monument in spring 2012.

For the Mayor of Nice, “conducting an archaeological excavation here is like decrypting the genome of Nice. With the exploration and opening of this site, every citizen of Nice learns more about their history, and learning more about their history is learning more about oneself.”

A city mindful of the richness of its heritage possesses an architectural and urban heritage that spans twenty-five centuries of history.

Nice has as many sites, remains, and monuments that testify to the richness of the past, the authorities that have succeeded one another, and the integration of various populations who have settled there.
