According to the departmental dossier on major risks in the Alpes-Maritimes, the city of Nice is exposed to the following risks: flooding, landslides, earthquakes, forest fires, weather phenomena (heavy rain and storms, heatwaves, strong winds, snow, etc.), marine pollution, risks related to the transport of hazardous materials by road, rail, and pipelines, etc.
The people of Nice undoubtedly remember several significant events from recent decades:
– The 4.8 magnitude earthquake in February 2001,
– The flooding of the Var River on November 5, 1994,
– The severe weather of November 2000 and 2005 and December 2008 which caused significant landslides,
– The accident of a truck carrying liquid oxygen in 1991 on the A8 at the Nice Nord interchange,
– The October 1979 tsunami at Nice Cรดte d’Azur Airport and the flooding of the Paillon River.
To address these risks, the city of Nice has implemented a Municipal Safeguard Plan defining the organization planned by the municipality to ensure alert, information, protection, support, and assistance of the population. This plan is an operational tool, assisting in decision-making, available to the Mayor which includes:
– The organization of the Municipal Command Post (crisis unit)
– Various actions that must be carried out by municipal and community services in the form of reflex cards,
– An inventory of resources owned by the municipality or that can be provided by external companies,
– Cartographic resources to locate risk zones and threatened stakes.
Nice is one of the 1,306 municipalities, out of 9,758 concerned, that have developed a Municipal Safeguard Plan.
