Swing, Bebop, Free, Fusion… So many universes, different sensibilities that Laurent Sarrien – drummer – constantly encounters and explores. The idea of the “Vibes Trio” is, for him, a journey through twenty years of music and discoveries from all horizons, an opportunity to revisit, this time on the vibraphone, the most intense moments, the themes with which a true connection has been made.
Without pastism or nostalgia, the Trio enjoys exploring a vast repertoire, from Duke Ellington to the present day, unearthing gems, those magnificent works that are little known, rarely played. Some seem written for the vibraphone-guitar-double bass trio, others represent more of a challenge for a formation without drums… but within the intimate warmth of the group’s sound, with the clarity of the vibraphone and the richness of the strings, each piece will ultimately find its natural place and its own color.
Laurent SARRIEN
Vibraphone
Trained in percussion at the Dijon Conservatory, Laurent Sarrien is first and foremost a co-founder of the highly regarded Collectif Mu (winner of the Vienne competitions in 1995 and La Défense in 1996, with two albums on Seventh Records) and the Crescent Jazz-Club in Mâcon, a club managed by the musicians of the Collectif, and praised by the national press (Le Monde, Jazzman, Jazz Magazine…). From 1993 to the present, he works primarily as a drummer, accompanying Steve Grossman, Bobby Few, Christian Escoudé, Eric Lelann, and many others, at the Crescent of course, but also at the New Morning, the Sunset, at festivals in Vienne, Nice, at Parc Floral, etc…
While still very active on drums (notably alongside François Chassagnite, Shirley Bunnie Foy, Dimitri Shapko, Dodo Goya, Ronnie Rae Junior), it is on the vibraphone that he celebrates, in February 2005, the tenth anniversary of the Crescent on the National Stage of the Théâtre de Mâcon (together with Italian trumpeter Flavio Boltro), and that he participates in 2006 in the recording of Gaël Horellou’s album “explorations” (DTC Records).
Olivier GIRAUDO
Guitar
Olivier Giraudo was born in Paris, to a professional musician father who gave him a strong taste for music from an early age, and more particularly for Jazz. After studying with Pierre Cullaz, he performed in Parisian clubs alongside renowned musicians such as Al Leavitt, Gilbert “Bibi” Rovere, Charles “Lolo” Bellonzi, Alby Cullaz, and accompanied the “Golden Gate Quartet”. In 1989, under the direction of René Bec (former pianist of Aimée Barelli), he became the regular guitarist for the “Loews Monte Carlo Big Band” and later worked under the direction of Maurice Jarre in the Philharmonic of Monte-Carlo at the “Sporting Club Monte-Carlo”, where he accompanied great stars such as Frank Sinatra, Peggy Lee, Natalie Cole, Shirley Bassey, Céline Dion…
At the Nice Cimiez Jazz Festival, he appeared alongside Shirley B. Foy, Georges Arvanitas, Oliver Jackson.
He also worked under the direction of Maurice Jarre (Philharmonic of Monte Carlo) where he played and worked with high-profile musicians such as Steve Grossman (M. Davis), Frank Foster (former leader of the Count Basie Orchestra), Paul Jeffrey (Monk, Basie).
With a style reminiscent of great guitarists like Jimmy Raney, René Thomas, Grant Green, Olivier Giraudo knows how to apply his talent and experience as an accompanist/soloist to the service of musicians such as François Chassagnite (trumpeter/singer): with whom he recorded the album Jubilation in 2006 (TCB Records), the Marciac festival, the Alassio festival 2007, Dimitri Shapko (tenor sax), Sébastien Chaumont (alto sax), Laurent Sarrien (Vibraphone), Sewing Jack (double bass), Eric Polchi (sookie Polchi) and many others…
Fabrice BISTONI
Double Bass
For over ten years, Fabrice Bistoni has been the essential double bassist on the Azurian jazz scene. In 1998, he formed the “Mosaic” Quartet with F. D’Oelsnitz, Y.Serra, and S. Chaumont, which became the Quartet/Quintet of trumpeter François Chassagnite. The group participated in the festivals of Marciac, the Paris Fair, Ramatuelle, the Midem (Cannes), etc., and recorded “Un Poco Loco” (TCB Records). In 2003, he went on tour with a new trio composed of R. Persi on piano and J.P. Ceccarelli on drums. In high demand as an accompanist beyond Jazz, he has multiplied his performances in the most varied projects (Musical Theater, Song…).
