In accordance with the spirit of the GREEN Deal, the departmental council is committed to promoting healthy eating and combating food waste.
In the department’s middle schools, out of the 4.6 million meals served, it is estimated that 644 tons of waste are generated annually.
The goal of the Alpes-Maritimes departmental council is to reduce this by half, so that the savings can be reinvested by the establishments to purchase local products.
The EGALIM Law, a fundamental societal issue
Numerous experiments have shown that to control meal costs, it is important to engage in the fight against food waste. In accordance with the EGALIM law, it is important to assess the current status in school cafeterias to implement necessary measures to limit this waste and to evaluate the relevance and benefit of the actions undertaken.
Thus, around twenty middle schools responded positively to conduct an experiment during the 2019/2020 academic year to limit food waste in the cafeterias. Children should eat until they are satisfied, but in the quantities they have chosen.
