Day of remembrance on November 11 in memory of the 1.315 million French soldiers who fell at the front from 1914 to 1918, of which 500,000 were never identified.
In Nice, the ceremony was held at the War Memorial in the presence of the authorities, Prefect Bernard Gonzales, the Mayor of Nice Christian Estrosi, national, regional, and local elected officials, veterans associations, and the public.
During his speech, Christian Estrosi wanted to recall the historical significance of this day:
โWe commemorate the armistice of November 11, 1918. This war is the cruel mother of all others. It inflicted a terrible, shared ordeal. It reaped a generation and left the survivors with a view of life forever etched by pain, fear, and death,โ not without a glance at current events: โOn this November 11, we commemorate those who fell for France, for our freedoms. From the war memorial in Nice, we think of them, as well as those who fight every day to protect us and defend our values, at the risk of their lives.โ
