The Matisse Museum highlights a little-known aspect of Henri Matisse’s work: his sculptures. For the first time since the 1970s, the museum is dedicating an exhibition to the artist’s sculpture. It is an important part of his work that remains under-recognized.
Recognized as one of the greatest painters of the first half of the 20th century, Henri Matisse, the sculptor, is still to be discovered. Nearly eighty-four pieces, created between 1900 and 1950, will be on display.
Henri Matisse is a complete artist; paintings, sculptures, he explored the entire universe of art. The exhibition takes as its starting point the artist’s method of creation and his work on transforming the figure through serial variations. It also showcases a significant collection of non-Western sculptures from the artist’s collection, serving as an inspiration and in dialogue with Matisse’s work.
