The 8 international teams of the 2013 Extreme Sailing Series will compete on the beautiful waters of Nice on Thursday, October 3, Friday, October 4, Saturday, October 5, and Sunday, October 6.
This French Act 7 of the Extreme Sailing Series will be the penultimate event before the grand finale that will take place in Brazil in mid-November and will determine the winner of the 7th edition of this global sailing competition circuit.
Firmly focused on sports, Nice will host the Extreme Sailing Series in the Bay of Angels for the third consecutive year.
The sporting concept of the Extreme Sailing Series is unique. It is based on the “Stadium Racing” format where the world’s best professional sailing teams compete on equal terms aboard one-design catamarans. A circuit recognized by the highest international sports authority in sailing. The Extreme Sailing Series has been granted “special event” status by ISAF, the International Sailing Federation.
This global circuit enters its 7th year, with a presence on 3 continents and 7 stages in emblematic cities between March and November 2013: Muscat (Oman), Singapore, Qingdao (China), Porto (Portugal), Cardiff (UK), Nice (France), and finally Brazil in mid-November.
The Extreme Sailing Series once again enjoys a high-quality sports lineup this year, featuring the biggest names in the world of professional sailing and a mix of 13 nationalities.
The crew on these 12m one-design catamarans together boast 21 Olympic appearances, 30 America’s Cup participations, and 20 world championship titles.
Similar to last year, the Acts are played over four days: one day of racing on open water dedicated to the media, followed by three days of stadium racing accessible to the public and VIP guests. Each race lasts about 15 minutes and, depending on the weather, 6 to 8 starts are given per day, ensuring a great spectacle.
In the provisional overall ranking, after 5 events held since March 2013, the Omanis of The Wave, Muscat hold the top step of the podium by one point ahead of the Swiss team Alinghi. Behind, at 8 and 10 points respectively, there is a fierce battle for the 3rd place on the overall podium between the Austrians of Red Bull Sailing Team and the Danish SAP Extreme Sailing Team.
