France obtains an honorable 4th place in the ranking of the most “powerful” passports. The French, like the Spaniards and Swedes, can visit 185 countries without having to apply for a visa beforehand.
Japanese and Singaporeans can visit 189 countries without a visa
We don’t always think about it, but being French also means being able to travel easily around the world. The French passport allows its holder to visit 185 countries without a visa or by requesting a visa on arrival, directly at the airport. In the second quarter of 2019, France, tied with Spain and Sweden, ranks 4th in the list of the most “powerful” passports.
Germany, which occupied the top spot at the beginning of 2018, is now second, tied with Finland and South Korea (187 countries that can be visited without a visa). Two Asian countries, Japan and Singapore, have now risen to the top of the ranking: their citizens can travel to 189 countries without a visa.
“Power” of passports: EU countries are not all on the same level
Other European Union countries are also not far behind in the ranking. Austria, Portugal, and the Netherlands rank 5th (184 countries), Belgium, Greece, Ireland, Norway, and the United Kingdom 6th (183 countries), Malta 7th (182 countries), the Czech Republic 8th (181 countries), Iceland and Lithuania 9th (180 countries), Latvia, Slovakia, and Slovenia 10th (179), and Estonia and Hungary 11th (178 countries).
The countries with the “weakest” passports are Somalia (105th, only 31 countries), Pakistan (106th, 30 countries), Syria (107th, 29 countries), Iraq (108th, 27 countries), and Afghanistan (109th, 25 countries).
