The General Council of Alpes-Maritimes is committed to improving services for the elderly.

Policies in favor of the elderly are a central focus of departmental solidarity policies. In 2013, 150 million euros are allocated for this purpose. In the Alpes-Maritimes, people over 60 years old currently represent 28% of the total population, amounting to 300,000 individuals; by 2020, this rate is expected to reach 31% with 40,000 people over 85 years old.

The number of dependent elderly individuals is more than 22,000, of which 15,000 are women. Fifteen people receive APA (Personalized Autonomy Allowance) at home for a cost of 71 million euros.

If 8 out of 10 people state their wish to remain at home in case of losing autonomy, every year, 20,000 people die from domestic accidents. Since one in five lives alone at home and only 4% of the elderly population resides in institutions, the issue of adapting housing becomes a critical factor.

For Eric Ciotti, President of the General Council: “Today, technological innovations allow us to place home care and the prevention of domestic risks at the forefront of our action priorities.”

From this arises a strategic plan that combines actions and technological innovations for the elderly, outlined in several points, the main ones of which are:

– For the 15,000 APA recipients, a home safety pack including several detectors
– Development of telemanagement for monitoring home services
– Strengthening the prevention of domestic risks through home adaptation
– Developing concrete actions to support the professionalization and access to personal services

Finally, the General Council is considering a major housing plan that will create optimal living and assistance conditions.
