The Nice Academy was established on October 1, 1965. During the 1965/1966 school year, 230,000 students from Alpes-Maritimes and Var were enrolled. Today, the Nice Academy celebrates its 50th anniversary and welcomes over 366,000 primary, middle, and high school students.
In 1965, the decentralized services of the Ministry of National Education of the Nice Academy covered the departments of Alpes-Maritimes, Var, and Corsica. In 1975, Corsica was also established as an academy and separated from that of Nice.
A university was established in Nice in October 1965. It was then composed of the faculties of arts, sciences, and law and economics. In 1989, the university was renamed University of Nice Sophia Antipolis.
The University Center of Toulon and Var was created on June 25, 1970. It included 3 teaching and research units. The University Center of Toulon and Var was transformed into the University of Toulon and Var on February 22, 1979.
