The city of Nice has 154 educational institutions. According to the forecasts of the Academic Inspection, the numbers remain stable this school year. More than 28,000 children are welcomed this morning in the schools of Nice.
Since 2008, all educational institutions have undergone work for a total cost of 57.6 million euros. These efforts by the municipality will continue, particularly concerning the necessary construction and expansion programs to cope with the increase in school numbers in certain areas, thus necessitating the opening of new classes.
As every year, renovation, expansion, waterproofing, accessibility, compliance work on catering facilities, creation of self-service areas, and renovation of premises and sanitary facilities have been carried out. 156 projects, of varying scale, for the maintenance of educational institutions have been completed.
In addition, 80 projects for compliance, renovation, and soundproofing of catering units have been carried out.
As part of the work carried out in school canteens and refectories, this year focused on improving the reception conditions for children, particularly through refectory refurbishment, complete renewal of furniture, or the installation of soundproofing panels.
The city of Nice currently has 120 official housing units within its schools. Among them, 46 are occupied by teachers and 46 by school guards.
Since 2008, these include:
• 17 housing units brought up to standard and allocated to teachers;
• 12 housing units rehabilitated to accommodate guards (Baumettes1 School, Bischoffsheim, Caucade, Cimiez Essling, Digue des Français, Piaget, Pagnol, Nice Flore, Rancher, St Barthélémy, Ste Hélène, St Sylvestre schools).
Within the mixed elementary school 1 Saint Barthélémy, one housing unit was rehabilitated to accommodate a guard for the entire school group. It is located on the 1st floor. Cost of work carried out: 73,000 euros
The remaining vacant housing will either be used to meet school needs (the creation of a classroom, a staff room, etc.) or for teachers and/or guards, or will be converted into rental housing.
In fact, concerned about the difficulties faced by citizens in accessing housing, the city of Nice has chosen to repurpose former vacant official housing within public schools to convert them into rental housing. A partnership protocol between the city of Nice and the social landlord Côte d’Azur Habitat was signed in April 2013 for the transfer of 17 official housing units to:
• 4 apartments (1T2 and 3T4) from the Nice Flore school group – 90, bd René Cassin
• 4 apartments (T3) from the Ariane Sud school group – Marcel Pagnol School
• 4 apartments (T4) from the Bois de Boulogne school group, 2 Rue de la Santoline, located above the gymnasium
• 2 apartments (T3) from the Col de Villefranche School, Avenue du Mont Alban
• 3 apartments (T4) from the Saint Charles school group, 15 Chemin du Mont Gros
These housing units will be converted into social housing as they have independent access, which will not disrupt the schools. Recipients of these housing units will have to meet social housing eligibility criteria, and candidates will be presented to the Côte d’Azur Habitat Allocation Commission.
