-Death of Raoul Mille: Estrosi’s Indecency at Its Peak ::

With emotions subsided and the electoral campaign over, it is now time to question the morbid electoral circus organized by the municipality and Christian Estrosi around the tragic death of Raoul Mille. This does not diminish the affection for the writer and the respect both for his memory and for the grief of his relatives. Quite the opposite…

From “noisy weddings” to mosques turned into police stations to his vigorous support for the Pink Parade, Christian Estrosi never ceased to engage in electoral artifices throughout this campaign.

Thus, the death of Raoul Mille – writer and municipal councilor – was also exploited and theatrically presented. A chapel of rest was set up at city hall, in front of Christian Estrosi’s office.

Municipal police officers – standing at attention! – were assigned to guard the coffin. It was even covered with a tricolor flag, a privilege explicitly codified by our laws. Many veterans expressed their surprise at the use of the flag, particularly inappropriate only two days after the tribute paid to the four soldiers who fell in Afghanistan.

This tasteless display was also a perfect illustration of what municipal councilor Marouane Bouloudhnine recently described in a complaint as an “autocratic” drift. As Christian Estrosi sees the possibilities of fulfilling his national ambitions slowly diminishing, he now seems determined to transform Nice and the Metropolis into a small principality.

Philippe Vardon – president of Nissa Rebela – is considering filing a complaint with the Prefect and the Prosecutor regarding the liberties Christian Estrosi has taken with republican customs and the use of the tricolor flag.
