The IOC Executive Board recommends the 25 sports that will form the core sports for the 2020 Games.

The 25 sports in question are: athletics, rowing, badminton, basketball, boxing, canoeing, cycling, equestrian sports, fencing, football, gymnastics, weightlifting, handball, hockey, judo, swimming, modern pentathlon, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, shooting, archery, triathlon, sailing, and volleyball.

The Executive Board (EB) has recommended not including wrestling, governed by the International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles (FILA), in the list of core sports. Wrestling will thus join the seven shortlisted sports—baseball/softball, karate, roller sports, sport climbing, squash, wakeboarding, and wushu—aiming to become an additional sport in the Olympic program for 2020.

These eight sports must make a presentation to the Executive Board at its meeting in May in Saint Petersburg, Russia. The EB will select from these sports the one it will recommend for admission as an additional sport to the 2020 Games program at the IOC’s 125th Session.

To ensure the Olympic Games continue to engage sports enthusiasts across all generations, the Olympic program commission systematically reviews each sport after every edition of the Games.

As a reminder, golf and rugby sevens were admitted in 2009 to the Olympic program of the 2016 Games as additional sports.

The IOC’s 125th Session will be held from September 7 to 10, 2013, in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
