Press Release from the Nice Town Hall

Nearly 12,000 people mobilized to contribute to and enrich the debate on the redevelopment project of the Promenade des Anglais and the extension of the tramway network.

The initial assessment (as of April 10 at 4:00 PM) reveals:
โ€ข The urgent need for a tramway to connect the city of Nice from East to West,
โ€ข An undeniable support from the population for the redevelopment project of the Promenade des Anglais,
โ€ข A majority of contributions in favor of a route taking the Promenade des Anglais.

Indeed, 2000 people expressed themselves via registries made available to them, by mail, and via the internet.

In addition to these individual efforts, a significant number of petitions have been filed through which more than 10,000 people have expressed themselves.

For context, the public survey on line 1 of the tramway had mobilized nearly 11,000 people, 90% of whom had spoken out against the project.

Given the significant volume of contributions received, their richness, and diversity, Christian Estrosi, Deputy Mayor of Nice, President of Nice Cรดte dโ€™Azur has requested that these observations and proposals be subject to thorough analysis in the coming three weeks.

For this purpose, a working group comprising elected officials from the Nice Cรดte dโ€™Azur urban community will be created. The opposition group will be involved in this reflection.

While waiting for these additional elements, Christian Estrosi renews his thanks to all the inhabitants for the interest they have shown in the projects initiated over the past year.

Reaction from Patrick Allemand, President of the โ€œChanger dโ€™รจreโ€ group at the Municipal Council and PACA Regional Councilor.

The public consultation phase that began on March 16 is coming to an end.

It’s time for the last contributions to be submitted at the Urban Planning Forum, and obstacles are increasing.

It seems that original petitions must be submitted to be considered, which puts opponents in a dilemma: submitting the originals now means being deprived of them for the public inquiry.

The deposit by a Facebook group consisting of 1885 people who spoke out against the tramway route on the Promenade also proves problematic.

The deposit of an online petition that gathered several hundred signatures is not foreseen and nobody knows how to account for an online petition.

In total, nearly 3500 voices that clearly spoke out against the tram on the Promenade are being silenced.

Finally, the icing on the cake: comments accompanied by attachments which cannot be directly integrated into the designated notebook must be sent to the President of the Urban Community, Christian ESTROSI, to be registered.

Reaction from Jean-Christophe Picard, president of PRG 06.

On the very day the consultation ended, Christian Estrosi announces that
the people of Nice are predominantly in favor of the tramway route on the
Promenade des Anglais…

First of all, one is surprised at the speed with which he reviewed the 2,000
written contributions, not to mention the petitions submitted and the
spoken interventions made during public meetings…

Then, it should be remembered that the purpose of this consultation was not
limited to the issue of the Promenade des Anglais… Contrary to what
we were led to believe with posters and advertising inserts
(paid with public money), it was not a referendum where the answer
was supposed to be a simple “yes” or “no” to the mayor’s project!

Finally, curiously, the consultation that had already taken place on this same
issue in 2007 concluded that the Nice residents were resolutely against the
tramway through the Prom’… And today, it would be the opposite?

All this is not serious and demonstrates that in Nice, participatory democracy
is flouted. Only the opinion of Christian I matters…
