“THE MISER” by MOLIÈRE
Théâtre de l’Eau Vive Company
Directed by: Fabienne COLSON and Jacques FENOUILLET
The Miser or The School of Lie is a comedy by Molière in 5 acts and in prose, created at the Théâtre du Palais-Royal on September 9, 1668. The subject is strongly inspired by a play by Plautus titled The Pot of Gold.
In period costumes, the actors take you to a bourgeois house to meet Harpagon, a wealthy widower, with his children Cléante and Elise. Both are in love, but fear that their father will refuse their choice because he prefers a marriage of wealth to a marriage of love. Harpagon, miserly and quick-tempered, falls victim to his excessive love for his chest of gold coins. To keep it all for himself, he must agree to marry his son to a penniless woman and his daughter to his steward.
“All men are alike in words; it is only actions that mark their differences.” (Elise, Act I, Scene One)
“Damn greed and the greedy!” (La Flèche, Act I, Scene III)
“Let him feel who is snotty wipe his nose.” (La Flèche, Act I, Scene III)
