Nice-Premium: Can you explain how the Cavigal wrestling tournament was born?
Frédéric Le Calvez: The club wanted to offer its 450 members a friendly sports event where children from different sections could meet during mini wrestling matches.
NP: How many competitors will there be, what are their ages and levels?
FLC: This tournament is for the “poussins” (5 to 11 years old) and the club has nearly 200 of them spread across our 15 activity sites.
NP: What will be the highlights of the tournament?
FLC: A little before the start of the competition around 2 PM, we will introduce the club’s champions as well as the educators. There will also be a demonstration afterwards.
NP: How is the Cavigal wrestling club doing, and what are its driving forces and best results?
FLC: The club is in full expansion within the city of Nice for several seasons now. Currently, we wish to sustain our local sports activities in different neighborhoods of the city. With several champions this season, we also wish to allow our pool of young licensees to access high-level competition if they wish. Our senior elite team should reach 1st division within 3 seasons.
NP: Do you have any plans for the start of the 2008 season and what will be the major events of the next season?
FLC: The season resumes in September at about twenty schools in Nice during and after school hours. Next season, we aim to increase our sports results and reaching the 2nd division would be a splendid example for all the young wrestlers in the club.
NP: What do you need to further develop your discipline, and do you hope that the Olympics in August will bring you more participants?
FLC: We hope for the support of local authorities in sustaining our sports activities and our educator positions that operate throughout the season in the neighborhoods of Nice. Additionally, we are currently developing our “sponsor” department and wish to secure strong corporate partnerships for the development of our club in the city of Nice.
Obviously, with 9 qualifiers, French Wrestling should be more highlighted during these games and a medal would provide media coverage for our discipline.
