The SPA has published its annual report for the year 2023, regarding abandonment, adoption, and animal abuse.
Nationally, 44,844 abandoned or abused animals were taken in by the SPA in 2023. More specifically, 28,652 cats, 13,124 dogs, and 3,068 New Pets, equines, and farm animals. Notably due to a decrease in adoptions, -1.5% in 2023.
In total, 27,642 reports were handled over the course of 2023 by the teams, which is 16% more than in 2022. In comparison, 40,587 companions including 25,228 cats and 12,476 dogs, found a new family.
Increase in abandonments in the PACA region
In the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region, 1,519 animals were taken in by the 5 shelters in the region, Flayosc, Nice, Le Cannet, Briançon, Aix-en-Provence, and Maison SPA, which is 4% more than in 2022. In the PACA region alone, 1,297 animals were adopted, which is 3% less than in 2022.
The SPA association wishes to continue in 2024 its fight against the animal-as-object. In December, large advertising campaigns were launched against buying an animal as a Christmas gift, without having realized the responsibility of caring for an animal.
