This Friday, July 7, the City of Nice paid a vibrant tribute to Jean Moulin, hero of the French Resistance, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of his death.
The special ceremony took place at 22 rue de France, where the former Romanin art gallery was located, which served as a cover for Moulin’s clandestine operations and his network during the Resistance. A commemorative plaque was inaugurated there in his honor in 2013. The municipality, mindful of the duty of remembrance, regularly involves students in these patriotic events.
The choir of the Regional Conservatory, accompanied by the music of the Municipal Guard, was present to sing the famous Chant des partisans. Additionally, all 5th-grade students from Nice’s 120 elementary schools will receive a booklet next year on Jean Moulin’s life. This booklet will trace his journey from his childhood to his role as a unifier of resistance movements. More than 4,000 children will thus be able to discover the history of this French hero.
An exhibition and a fight against oblivion
In parallel with the tribute, a Jean Moulin exhibition will be held at Place de la Croix de Marbre until September 15. Visitors will have the opportunity to delve into Moulin’s life and legacy, as well as understand his crucial role in the fight against the Nazi occupation.
The goal is to raise awareness among future generations about the history of France and the heroism of those who sacrificed their lives for freedom. The City of Nice wishes for this event to be a true lesson to fight against oblivion and to honor the memory of those who have marked our country.
