Last Saturday, the Rotary Clubs of Nice organized the “Throw Cancer Away” campaign at three major (or medium-sized) stores: Carrefour Lingostière, Intermarché Saint Roch, and Monoprix de Cimiez.
The campaign was aligned with World Cancer Day on February 4th to increase its local impact.
For many years, ROTARY has been committed to disease prevention: thanks to its long-term efforts, polio is on the verge of being eradicated. Regarding cancer, although it is the leading cause of death in France (148,000 people each year), there is no national fundraising action day.
Since February 2015, Rotary and its Endowment Fund “Jetons Cancer” have been innovating with a simple initiative: volunteers conduct a collection once a year, every first Saturday in February, at the entrance of major shops by giving a shopping cart token in exchange for one euro.
Donors’ trust is based on one principle: all funds collected are entirely dedicated to purchasing equipment and advancing research.
Additionally, a scientific committee of the Endowment Fund, composed of experts in the field, provides a detailed opinion on project financing in light of the objectives.
