Tourism Barometer: The year starts strong on the French Riviera

Latest News

Since July 2017, every month has seen a noticeable increase in visitor numbers on the Côte d’Azur, and the winter months confirm this trend.

In January, the growth is very clear, with double-digit increases for most indicators.

From November to January, the occupancy of hotels and tourist residences increased by 5 points compared to the winter of 2016-17, and overnight stays grew by 10%. This is the best result since the winter of 2008-09.

Air travel stays increased by 9% over the same period, with a +11% rise for leisure-motivated stays and +31% for business-related stays.

This trend is expected to continue in February. Indeed, hotel booking rates collected at the end of January indicated a 5-point lead in occupancy for February.

According to David Lisnard, President of CRT CÔTE d’AZUR FRANCE: “The winter season remains the main challenge for European tourist destinations. However, the Côte d’Azur is further strengthening its appeal during this period, thanks to the diversity of its clientele and the exceptional quality of its tourism offerings—particularly leisure activities such as sports and business—driven by the Côte d’Azur France brand.”
