The Departmental Museum of Asian Arts in Nice presents the new exhibition by Indian photographer Mahesh Shantaram, titled “Facing India.” This exhibition, which will be held from June 26 to September 30, 2024, offers visitors the opportunity to discover facets of the world’s most populous country.

The exhibition “Facing India” is part of the “Photographers in Asia” program, designed to provide visitors with an enriched perspective on Asian cultures, complementing the museum’s permanent collection. This dedicated space presents a varied selection of images, ranging from landscapes to portraits, including photojournalism. Each year, the museum launches a call for applications open to professional photographers of all nationalities, and five projects are selected to enhance the cultural programming of the establishment.

Through the exhibition “Facing India,” the museum reaffirms its commitment to the values of sharing and excellence upheld by the Department of Alpes-Maritimes. This free event for all demonstrates the community’s desire to make culture accessible to the greatest number, thus promoting a true cultural influence across the entire territory.

Who is Mahesh Shantaram?

Trained at the Spéos photography school in Paris, Mahesh Shantaram has always been fascinated by the social and cultural diversity of contemporary India. Based in Bangalore, the artist offers through his shots a nuanced vision of his fellow citizens, whether they are billionaires, bikers, young schoolgirls, or artists. His photographs reveal the inherent contradictions of a nation in transformation, oscillating between tradition and modernity.

To create this series, Mahesh Shantaram had to navigate between the exotic stereotypes often conveyed by the international press and the pride and sensitivity of his compatriots. His work is distinguished by a sincere and respectful approach, aiming to capture the complex reality of contemporary India without filters or artifice.
