During her last appearance on the circuit almost a month ago, Fiona Ferro left us with a strong impression by proudly fighting her chance and reaching the final. Last night, the Valbone native participated in the US Open qualifiers, her current ranking not allowing her to directly enter the main draw. Unfortunately, the Frenchwoman lost in the first round against Rebecca Marino.
Fiona Ferro eliminated in first round of US Open 2026 qualifications
The Valbone native Fiona Ferro is having a difficult season in Grand Slams in 2026. She has only played one match in a main draw, swept in 2 sets by future winner Mirra Andreeva at Roland Garros. Despite intensive training at the Patrick Mouratoglou Academy for several days with the captain of the French Billie Jean King Cup team, Alizé Cornet, the efforts did not pay off.
Currently ranked 141st in the WTA rankings, Fiona Ferro had to go through qualifications to hope to reach the main draw of the last Grand Slam of the season: the US Open. Unfortunately, her hopes were short-lived, eliminated in just over an hour by Canadian Rebecca Marino (417th).
The Frenchwoman never really got into her match and was overwhelmed by her opponent. Quickly trailing 5-0 in the first set, Fiona Ferro loses heavily 6/1 in just 25 minutes. With an inconsistent serve and three times more unforced errors than winners for the Frenchwoman, the score perfectly reflects the gap in level on the court.
The second set is nonetheless more competitive. Broken early, the Valbone native reacts mid-set thanks to a successful break back and regains the lead at 4/3. Unfortunately, Fiona failed to extend the gap and loses logically in two sets 6/1-6/4. Serious and focused, Rebecca Marino thus qualifies for the next round of qualifications, well helped notably by her eight aces and 22 winners throughout the match. She will face Elena Pridankina in the second round of qualifications.
