Following the violence and looting that occurred during the protest on Saturday, October 17, 114 people were arrested within the jurisdiction of the Nice judicial court, including 56 minors. The first judicial decisions have been handed down, with four adults sentenced to prison time and several held in provisional detention.
The legal proceedings following the violence and looting that occurred in Nice on October 17 and 18 are continuing. Since Saturday, 114 people have been arrested within the jurisdiction of the Nice judicial court, resulting in 110 placements in police custody. Among those arrested are 58 adults and 56 minors, aged 12 to 17 years old.
The prosecutor of the Nice Republic, Damien Martinelli, communicated on Tuesday, October 20, regarding the first decisions handed down by the courts. The proceedings concern notably acts of violence, property damage, and aggravated theft. Several hearings are still to take place, for both adults and minors.
Four convictions to prison sentences and several held in provisional detention
During the first appearances before the Nice criminal court, four adults were sentenced to prison terms accompanied by a detention order. Three other individuals were placed in provisional detention pending their trial, after their cases were referred. Three individuals were also placed under judicial supervision as part of a referral request. One defendant was acquitted.
The report issued by the prosecution also indicates fourteen people incarcerated following their appearance before the criminal court on Monday. This figure includes the eleven people incarcerated after their conviction as well as the three placements in provisional detention pending a later hearing.
Judicial proceedings continued on Tuesday, October 20, with new hearings scheduled for adult and minor defendants referred to the prosecution. In total, 114 people have been arrested since the start of the events, with 110 placements in police custody.
On the side of minors, 22 have been referred to be tried before a juvenile court. For two of them, aged over 16 and already under judicial supervision, the prosecution requested provisional detention.
The proceedings mainly concern acts of participation in a group with intent to commit violence or property damage, participation in an unlawful gathering after warning, and concealing one’s face during demonstrations accompanied by disturbances. Acts of aggravated theft and receipt of stolen goods are also involved.
Some of those prosecuted have no criminal record
The criminal profile of those charged constitutes another element of the report issued by the prosecution. Damien Martinelli had specified on Monday that half of the adults prosecuted and the vast majority of minors had no criminal record.
Those arrested have varied profiles, with ages ranging between 12 and 49 years old. The proceedings initiated should now allow the courts to examine the facts alleged against each of them and to determine individual responsibilities in the violence and looting that occurred in Nice.
While the first convictions were handed down on Monday, hearings continued on Tuesday to handle cases that have not yet been tried. The judicial report therefore remains subject to change as decisions are issued by the competent courts.
