On August 13, two students from the Departmental Prehistory Laboratory of Lazaret discovered the frontal bone of a young man from 170,000 years ago during excavations in the Lazaret Cave in Nice.
In this regard, Christian Estrosi, Deputy, Mayor of Nice, President of Nice Cรดte d’Azur, Eric Ciotti, President of the General Council of the Alpes-Maritimes, and Jean-Marc Giaume, Municipal Councilor in charge of Historical Heritage, Archaeology, and the Niรงoise Language and Culture, will visit the excavation site and provide an update on this major prehistoric discovery.
This visit will be conducted in the presence of Professor Henry de Lumley, President of ADEVREPAM.
This eminent paleontologist leads the Departmental Prehistory Laboratory of Lazaret which conducts excavations in the Nice cave.
The fragment of a nomadic hunter’s face belonged to the family of the last Homo erectus.
This skull, named โLazaret 24,โ found on this site, which has been excavated patiently for 50 years, could reveal important clues for understanding the gradual evolution towards the Neanderthal man.
The last human discovery in the cave dates back to 2009, with a child’s milk tooth.
