This Monday, December 18, was International Migrants Day. A demonstration that was an opportunity to denounce immigration policies.

No to the Asylum and Immigration Law! The bill by the Minister of the Interior, Gรฉrald Darmanin, aims to control immigration and improve integration in France. The National Assembly adopted a motion to reject the immigration bill by 270 votes to 265. The majority presence of the union, the CGT, at this demonstration, demanded that the government permanently withdraw this bill. According to Cรฉline Petit, a CGT leader in the Alpes-Maritimes, “the immigration rate in France is one of the lowest in Europe” at 12.7%.

“Undocumented Workers work and contribute to the economy of our country,” says Cรฉline Petit. The CGT, as well as groups of undocumented workers like La Cimade, demand the regularization of all undocumented workers. The union stands with immigrant populations to obtain the right to asylum and then a permanent right to stay in France. They also call for simpler procedures for renewing residence permits.
