The Anatole Jakovsky International Museum of Naïve Art welcomes, from May 5, 2023, to May 6, 2024, a special exhibition by Ben titled “we are all crazy”.

Ben, considered one of the most influential and innovative artists in contemporary art in France, has taken over more than 500 m² of the museum to explore the theme of madness and art. This exhibition is the result of a meeting between Ben’s works (over 200), his personal collection (over 150), and some pieces from the original collection of Anatole and Renée Jakovsky.

MY PREMISE IS THAT EVERY ARTIST HAS A TOUCH OF MADNESS THEY’D LIKE TO DISPLAY BUT DON’T DARE TO.

“I put all my family memories instead of masterpieces.” Three months of installation, punctuated by numerous adjustments around furniture selected by Ben. Some artworks were even created on-site.

Ben’s universe is thus revealed, in a series of moments that, from his “little ideas” to “new writings” through “sculptures,” “photography,” “time,” and “death,” form a kaleidoscope of his most current achievements. A small living room, a bedroom with its wardrobe, a bathtub, a foosball table, tables, and chairs conducive to conversation, a projection corner…

Who is Ben?

Ben, whose real name is Benjamin Vautier, born in 1935, is one of the major artists of the 20th century. Known as a pioneer of conceptual art in Europe, he emphasizes the idea or concept rather than the finished object. Ben began his artistic career in the 1950s, creating paintings and collages. However, he quickly turned to more experimental forms of art, such as performances and installations.

His work is characterized by a conceptual, interactive, and often humorous approach to art. Ben frequently uses everyday objects and inscriptions to explore themes such as the nature of art, popular culture, philosophy, and the human condition. His inscriptions, often ironic and provocative, challenge traditional notions of art and meaning.
