The prefecture of Alpes-Maritimes is strengthening prevention and security measures for the broadcast of the quarter-final of the 2026 World Cup between France and Morocco. The authorities are overseeing fan zones, establishment terraces and gatherings expected in Nice and in several municipalities of the department.

The quarter-final of the 2026 World Cup between France and Morocco, scheduled for this Thursday, July 9 at 10 p.m. at Boston stadium in the United States, is expected to bring together numerous supporters of both teams in Alpes-Maritimes.

Broadcasts are planned on the terraces of bars, pubs and restaurants as well as in several fan zones. To avoid crowd movement and preserve public order, the prefecture of Alpes-Maritimes reminds residents of several rules.

Television screens must be oriented towards the interior of the terraces in order to avoid the formation of crowds in front of establishments and to prevent disruption of pedestrian traffic.

Municipalities wishing to organize a fan zone must also comply with the obligations set by the State services. A prefectural circular reminds that each fan zone must be declared and have a security system as well as health and rescue facilities. Any undeclared installation or one that does not meet safety conditions may be subject to a prohibition order. At this stage, fewer than ten fan zones have been declared to the prefecture.

Police reinforcements and anti-intrusion device in Nice

Law enforcement will be mobilized before, during and after the match. Police officers and gendarmes, in uniform and in plain clothes, will ensure an increased presence throughout the evening. In Nice and in Cannes, CRS units as well as Sentinel patrols will supplement the operation.

Municipal police officers will also participate in operations to prevent dangerous behavior, acts of vandalism and public order disturbances. Particular attention will be paid to areas that have already hosted gatherings during previous World Cup matches.

In Nice, an anti-intrusion device will be installed on the Quai des États-Unis, in coordination with municipal police, to secure the festive gatherings expected in the city center. Health and rescue teams may also be mobilized if the situation requires it.

In this context, Laurent Hottiaux, prefect of Alpes-Maritimes, urges supporters to adopt responsible behavior and “enjoy this match by displaying fervor suited to the circumstances, without putting themselves or others in danger, without damaging public or private property and without disrupting traffic.”

The prefect’s chief of staff, Aurélie Lebourgeois, will accompany the security forces on the ground throughout the evening.
