Worrying increase in drownings in the Alpes-Maritimes

Latest News

The summer of 2024 is marked by a dramatic increase in drownings on the French Riviera. With eleven deaths already recorded, authorities are sounding the alarm.

A new tragedy struck the Riviera beaches this week. Last Wednesday around 8:30 a.m., an elderly woman was urgently rescued by firefighters in front of the Negresco. Taken out of the water by the lifeguards at the rescue station, she unfortunately could not be revived. This tragedy brings the number of drowning deaths in the Alpes-Maritimes to eleven since the start of the summer.

An Alarming Increase in Drownings

This death is not an isolated incident. Since July 1st, nearly 40 drownings have been recorded on the Riviera coastline, eleven of which were fatal. Local authorities are concerned by this significant increase compared to last year. Indeed, during the same period in 2023, only three deaths had been recorded. This year, the victims are mostly elderly people, often outside monitored areas or outside beach surveillance hours. The increasing number of swimmers, combined with extreme weather conditions, seems to have worsened the situation.

The Heatwave Factor

The persistent heatwave plays a major role in this resurgence of drownings. High temperatures are taxing on bodies, particularly those of the elderly. The temperature difference between the scorching air and the “cooler” water can lead to hydrocution or fainting. This phenomenon is especially dangerous as many swimmers choose to bathe early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid crowds, times when the beaches are not monitored. This choice, while understandable, exposes them to increased risks.

Call for Vigilance

In response to this alarming situation, firefighters in the Alpes-Maritimes have issued a call for vigilance. They specifically recommend that seniors use an open water swimming buoy to ensure their safety. The sea, although seemingly calm, remains an ever-present danger, especially during a heatwave. Vigilance is essential, even for experienced swimmers. Authorities also remind the public of the importance of respecting beach surveillance hours and choosing monitored areas to prevent further tragedies.

Here is a list of advice from the Ministry of Sports, the Olympic Games, and the Paralympic Games to avoid drowning:

  • Upon your arrival, learn about the swimming areas to know if they are monitored, prohibited, or dangerous.
  • Always stay attentive, even if the area is monitored.
  • Always follow the safety instructions indicated by the swimming flags and/or the lifeguards.
  • Do not consume alcohol before and during swimming.
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure before swimming.
  • Enter the water gradually, especially when the water is cold and you have been exposed to the sun.
