In 10 years, this innovative public policy known as Civic Service, inspired by the pioneering experience of Unis-Citรฉ and strongly promoted by the diverse associative sector, has proven to be a tremendous success: more than 420,000 young people have been mobilized since 2010, including 140,000 in the year 2019 alone โ more than 3 applications per available spot, both from young people and from associations or public services ready to welcome them…
If some question whether there are unnecessary public expenditures: it is evident that this is not the case with Civic Service, which not only mobilizes youth around the great causes of the 21st century but also helps them integrate into both civic and professional life.
After a period of significant growth, Civic Service is currently undergoing a transition phase, notably due to the implementation of the governmental Universal National Service project, where the role allocated to the development of Civic Service is not yet confirmed.
Expectations are high in this year 2020: the President of the Republic must affirm his intention to continue the development of Civic Service, so that one day all young people can experience this civic gap year, of “service” but also of learning and personal development that Civic Service represents today. The 10-year anniversary of Civic Service and the launch of the Universal National Service project will undoubtedly be an opportunity to do so.
And if tomorrow 1 in 2 young people were in Civic Service each year: wouldn’t we have succeeded in creating this “society of engagement” that we all long for?
