2024 Legislative Elections: Why Doesn’t Graig Monetti Withdraw?

Latest News

In the 2024 legislative elections, Graig Monetti came in 3rd in the 1st round in the 1st constituency in Nice. He maintains his candidacy for the second round against Ciotti (LR/RN) and Olivier Salerno (LFI/NFP).

In this first constituency of Alpes-Maritimes, Eric Ciotti, the leader of the Republicans who has allied with the far right, came in far ahead (41.04%) of the left-wing candidate Olivier Salerno (NFP/LFI), who garnered 26.62%, and the deputy mayor of Nice Graig Monetti (Horizons) with 22.79% in the first round.

[Facing the results of the National Rally / LR candidates in the three constituencies of Nice](https://www.nicepremium.fr/politique/legislatives-2024-les-resultats-du-premier-tour/), Benoît Kandel, Head of the Nice section of the RN, expressed his satisfaction in a press release: “*The agreement signed between Jordan Bardella for the National Rally and Eric Ciotti for the Republicans is working and is already bearing fruit*.”

Determined to become a deputy, for Graig Monetti “*defeating Éric Ciotti is within reach*.” However, he will need to do better than in 2022, when he [lost to Ciotti](https://www.liberation.fr/politique/elections/legislatives-a-nice-eric-ciotti-met-une-droite-a-graig-monetti-proche-destrosi-20220619_FELZKHHYIZHA5JGP74ACPMFAFI/) with 43.67% against 56.33%.

All the more so since in the 2024 legislative’s first round, he came third in the three-way race.

But this gamble seems lost in advance according to Robert Injey, former leader of the French Communist Party in the department 06. He criticizes in an open letter: “*By doing this, Graig Monetti is fulfilling Éric Ciotti’s dream of a three-way race to win*.”

LR calls to vote for Greig Monetti

The deputy mayor of Nice is clear. He believes he is “*the only one capable of bringing people together to avoid the worst*.”

His main argument: he committed to all those who voted for him in the first round, totaling 11,588 voters. He has also received support from the LR candidate Virgile Vanier Guerin, who gave a directive: “*Vote Graig Monetti*“, as did the independent environmentalist, Lalla Chama Ben Moulay, who came in fifth with her 2.81%.

“*Mr. Salerno, if he really wants Mr. Ciotti to lose this election, I ask him again: withdraw*,” he said on BFM Nice Côte d’Azur on Monday, July 1st.

While Renaissance calls for the withdrawal of their third-placed candidates to counter RN, Graig Monetti stands by his decision to remain in the second round of the 2024 legislative elections.

Christian Estrosi has meanwhile expressed his standpoint on Sud Radio this Wednesday, July 3rd: “*like Édouard Philippe, neither option. Neither RN, nor LFI*.”

According to him, his candidacy is a “*necessity*,” since he represents all those who would feel faced with an impossible choice. “*I will not let the people of Nice choose between the National Rally and La France Insoumise*,” he argues.

To win this election, in addition to his voters, he relies on the voices: “From the Republicans, some Greens, part of the left, and those disappointed with Mr. Ciotti.”
